26. Walk the Andador Escénico (Scenic Walk)

Located near Downtown Puerto Escondido, the Andador Escénico walkway (AKA Andador Turístico) was initially deemed too difficult to be built by the Oaxacan state. The authorities argued it was an “impossible dream.”

However, in 1992, Efrén Bruciaga and 200 workers spent three months building it. The Andador Escénico runs from the western end of Playa Principal to an overlook called Sueño Posible, which means a “possible dream” in Spanish. 

The walkway itself starts on a small street just past the Southern end of Bahía Principal Beach. The Sueño Posible viewpoint is about a one-mile walk (1.6 km) from there.

If you plan on going, wear a good pair of shoes. Some areas of the walkway have been battered by the waves, leading to structural issues along the way — so watch out and be careful on the Andador Escénico.

27. Day Trip to the Neighboring Beach Towns

While there’s no shortage of beaches in Puerto Escondido, you can also check out its neighboring beach towns on the Riviera Oaxaqueña (Oaxacan Riviera).

These towns include the pueblos of Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite and Puerto Angel. They are all located about 1-1.5 hours away by rental car.

Mazunte, Oaxaca

Mazunte makes for one of the best day trips from Puerto Escondido. It’s a quaint, laid back town, popular with bohemian types, backpackers, artists and yogis. (In fact, I did a 10 day silent meditation retreat in Mazunte 🧘‍♀️)

Playa Mermejita in Mazunte is said to be the best beach in Oaxaca, and one of the best beaches in Mexico. If you’re staying there all day, hike up to Punta Cometa, which overlooks this beach, for epic views of the sunset.

San Agustinillo, Oaxaca

The rainy season in Oaxaca lasts from May to October, and the coast of Oaxaca sees a lot of rain thanks to its tropical climate.
